In 1910, the town of Wallace, Idaho, along with many other western towns was embroiled in the fight against massive wildfires, the worst our country has every seen, then or since. A wildfire the size of Connecticut was burning in northeast Washington, the Idaho panhandle, and western Montana. In last August, hurricane force winds from a cold front whipped the many small fires into a blazing inferno, impossible to fight. Smoke from the fire could be seen as far east at New York and darkened the skies so much 500 miles out in the Pacific the ships were prevented from navigating via the stars at night….

Wallace, Idaho : Northwest Trip Day 2
Last year, Sue read a book called “The Big Burn” by Timothy Egan that had been recommended by a friend. She loves to visit places of history that she’s read about, and “The Big Burn” tells all about the huge wildfires of 1910 where wildfires popped up all around the west, including the area around Wallace, Idaho. Smoke from these fires was seen as far away as New York, and ships 500 miles out in the Pacific couldn’t navigate by the stars at night because they were blotted out by the smoke. So we decided to visit Wallace, Idaho, which was a center point for fighting some of these fires and see what we could find….
A Driving Day Through Montana : Northwest Trip Day 1

So our first day was mainly a driving day. We had a couple of choices for getting to northern Washington, but Sue wanted to visit Wallace and we love the scenery driving through Montana, so decided to go that route, which took us up I-15 in Utah, Idaho, and then to I-90 just west of Butte, Montana (a great place to go visit and spend some more time in one day in the future), and finally to Missoula, Montana where we stayed the night….
Our 2014 Trip Around The Northwest
Sue and I have never spent much time in the Northwest. We’ve visited a couple of times to see family in northern Washington, but that was about it. And it was time. We’ve heard a lot about the beautiful places to go see and finally decided that we needed to spend some time exploring Washington and Oregon. We won’t see everything, of course, but we hope to visit a lot of places, see some wonderful sights, and have some great adventures. Our plans include Seattle, Butchart Gardens over the border in Victoria, Olympic National Park, a drive down the Oregon coast, and everything else that we can find in between. Follow along and we’ll share with you what we find:…
